STC Library Photos

South Tyneside Council publish historical photos & documents online.   Two photos are captioned as the Pontop Railway near Jarrow in the 1960s, but I'm unsure about whereabouts these were taken.   Does anyone have more info?

Frank Sutcliffe

Frank Sutcliffe was a resident of Whitby who in the late 1800s & early 1900s took a great many photos of Whitby & its people, particularly at work.     I came across those below in the book Frank Meadow Sutcliffe: A Second Selection.     This & other publications are commonly available, via the internet & in Whitby.

Chris Killip - Photographer

Chris Killip (1946-2020) was a commercial photographer who switched to documentary photography in the 1970s, just in time to record the demise of heavy industry in NE England, with its affects on people & the region.   He published several celebrated books of iconic photos, but his son was instrumental in getting him to publish early work recording the end of Tyneside shipbuilding.   There is a Laing Art Gallery exhibition of this work - two of my rough snaps of this are below:

New Photo Site on the Web

Memory Lane is a new website which gives searchable access to several other photo webs as well as photos stored within itself.   It further enables folks to freely add their own photos, with the aim of creating a resource which extends across the UK and time (rather like Geograph).

Geograph - Ben Brooksbank

Geograph Britain & Ireland has the aim of photographically documenting the UK & Eire geographically & in time.   A couple of weeks ago some of Walter Dendy's photos were featured on this blog.   It seems that these were published on Geograph by Ben Brooksbank.

Geograph - Walter Dendy

Geograph Britain & Ireland has the aim of photographically documenting the UK & Eire geographically & in time.   I find this very useful & interesting, and I think we are indebted to photogaphers who submit their work to the cause.   One such is Walter Dendy (deceased), whose photos of historical railway scenes are wonderful & illuminating.

Beamish Crane in Use

A 5 ton Smith rail-mounted crane was stored by Beamish at TR for many years, during which time it was used for several engineering jobs before we got a larger crane & Beamish collected theirs.
