Hawthorn Leslie
R & W Hawthorn Leslie were a major locomotive & marine engine manufacturer & shipbuilder on Tyneside between 1886 & 1937, when the loco building arm was bought by RSH. Hawthorn Leslie continued as a major marine engine maker & shipbuilder, becoming part of British Shipbuilders in 1977.

Coal, Custom & Today
Volunteer Colin Gibson recently exported a piece of Tanfield coal to his brother in the Masif Central, France. Understanding the good luck stored in the gift, but unsure of first footing, the coal was simply burned.

Interesting Web Sites
There are many interesting web sites which show industrial, engineering, railway & social history similar to that portrayed by Tanfield Railway. One which I discovered recently shows Marsden Village, with its links to coal, industry & the South Shields, Marsden & Whitburn Colliery Railway (the Marsden Rattler). Whitburn Colliery was really at Marsden, which was one of only three category D villages to be razed by DCC.

Finding these web sites seems to need a combination of luck, persistence, following links & Google. Some only exist for a short time. Those which I find I publish on theLinks of Interest
page. If you find an interesting web site for inclusion, please let me know.
