More Rattler
Following Saturday's Rattler post, someone reminded me of a SSM&WCR coal train in an episode of M Portillo's Great British Railway Journeys. I've tracked this down to about 14 minutes into episode 11 of series 2, Newcastle to Chester le Street. This is an excellent local episode in its entirety, covering such as the Stephensons and Marsden Village.

The Rattler
Thanks are due to Tommy, who gave me a VHS cassette on which were a few seconds of film which I had not imagined existed - an RSH 18" heading the Marsden Rattler, or more formally a passenger train on the South Shields, Marsden & Whitburn Colliery Railway. There are other 1950s industrial railway & South Shields gems on the DVD, available from Wolverton Rail.
A still from the video - it looks like the rattler is heading away from Whitburn Does this bring to mind anywhere else? (from "South Shields Trolleybuses", Online Video OV462D) |
Tomorrow's Trains
Pending a further detailed survey of parts of the line from Causey to East Tanfield following recent heavy rainfall, the line between these two stations is not in in passenger use.
