Colonel George Liddel was big in the eighteenth century Tyneside coal trade. Bonnie Prince Charlie led to him becoming a colonel in the militia. He took over Ravensworth Castle, was involved in Strathmore Estates, was a founding member of the Grand Allies who built the Tanfield Waggonway, became an MP for Berwick, & joined the Newcastle hostmen. The Ravensworth & Strathmore estates have ties to Bowes & the monarchy. (A tiny part of the land now belongs to the Tanfield Railway Trust!) Read more about the Colonel on Wikipedia & the Liddel dynasty on Sunniside History Society web.
