Sir Cecil Algernon Cochrane MA, DCL, JP, 1869 - 1960, was Liberal MP for South Shields 1916-18, knighted at New Year 1933, chaired (1923-35) the council of Armstrong College (forerunner of Newcastle University) & was a director of several NE companies (Durham Mining Museum site lists Sir Cecil's mining directorships). He was the chairman of Newcastle & Gateshead Gas Company at nationalization in 1949, just after the eponymous loco was delivered from RSH to Redheugh Gasworks. Thanks to Peter Weightman, this loco was saved & has run since 1975 on Tanfield Railway.
