The Settlers Society
On a recent visit to Fountains Abbey near Ripon, I discovered an interesting connection with NE England through a temporary exhibition. During the Great Depression, Commander Vyner of Studley Royal House arranged government funding to resettle boys from Tyneside & train them in rural trades on his estate.
Note the statement that unemployment was nearly 100% in South Tyneside |

D21 & More
The Tanfield Railway Trust has negotiated the loan for static display of AW D21 from the NRM. It arrived today from Beamish Museum, where it has been stored for about 10 years. D21 is a very local loco, having been built & worked within about 7 miles of TR. Ultimately we'd like to see D21 working alongside D22, for which beforehand we must negotiate a restoration agreement & repair programme, then a working agreement with the NRM.

Teesside Steel
You may be aware that the trusses of Dorman Long steel which we are replacing on Marley Hill shed were supplied part riveted in the 1930s. A Teesside foundry, steel fabricator & loco builder featured on this blog in January 2014 was Head Wrightson. I recently found another of their structures west of Edinburgh:
