I came across an interesting list by the Newcastle Chronicle of the 100 greatest notherners over the last 100 years. Such lists are always contemporary & personal - there may be hundreds of NE 'greats' over the last century, & thousands of great & interesting people who were born / lived / invented / developed / led / inspired in NE England. Please comment on who would you add!

George and Robert Stephenson
Lord William Armstrong
Earl Grey
Joseph Swan
John Dobson
. . . . to name a few!
Charles Merz, born in Gateshead - electrified the NER's Tyneside lines & established the National Grid.
The late Colin Mountford and the late Dave Holroyde who by decades of research, published the monumental 'Industrial Railways & Locomotives of County Durham' in three volumes (the last being published in 2021 posthumously as a dedication to both authors) ensuring that present and future generations can read and digest the County's rich industrial history, now all but disappeared.
