Heritage Open Days September 2021

Tanfield Railway will be taking part in Heritage Open Days on Sundays 12 & 19 September 2021 by providing guided walks from ET to Causey, during which we'll describe the coal industry & railways of the area.   It will be an opportunity to promote TR, our history, our tercentenary plans, & volunteer opportunities.   Train journeys & refreshments will be available, but are not part of the free offer.
We need additional volunteers to lead or join in with these walks, to explain things such as the purpose of the Tanfield Waggonway, Causey Arch, & impress on visitors that there was a seed change in civil engineering leading to the Causey Embankment, on which we still run trains 300 years later.
The Causey Embankment about 100 years ago

The approx 3 mile walks on both Sundays will start from ET at 10.30 am, 12.30 pm & 2.30 pm. We expect each to last about 90 mins. Group size will be up to 10, but we may have a varied audience from child to industrial enthusiast, hence it'd be useful to have support for the group leader, to better cater for individual interests. Also, groups may be split so that those who are interested & able can descend into the gorge to view the embankment, culvert, coal mill remains, etc.

If you are interested in helping with these walks, or want to find more about what's involved, please contact me or email  HOD @ tanfield-railway .co .uk
