Ryhope Engines

Ryhope Engines Museum is steaming this weekend.
The R&W Hawthorn engines here pumped water
from limestone 250' below from 1868 until 1967.
The lobby area has open moving piston rods
connected to the beams above
The intermediate level  - with LP & HP cylinder tops .....
...... & valve chests .....
..... for both engines, which work independently
The upper storey .....
..... enables views of the beams .....
..... which rock quietly & almost without vibration
The boiler house has 3 Lancashire boilers .....
...... manufactured by Galloways
The LH boiler is out of use, this middle one is used alternately with the rightmost
The catchment of the Sunderland & South Shields Water Co.
