Everyday work, people & events at the World's Oldest Railway 1725North East England industrial steam railway heritage on a 1920-50 minor railway
I noticed the coal drops via satellite pictures; something I've never noticed during my visits to the Tanfield. Are they actually still in use?
The drops were used in the 1960s when coal from local collieries was brought by road to Marley Hill, to be dropped into waggons and sent down the Bowes Railway - maybe to Monkton coke works, or onto the staiths or BR at Jarrow.
