La Trochita

I received some photos from John Turnock, a regular photographer at Tanfield Railway, of his March 2012 visit to the Argentinian 750mm line which runs from Ing. Jacobacci  across the semi arid Patagonian plateau to Esquel in the foothills of the Andes.

The line is 250 miles long.   It was freight only at first, carrying passengers since 1950, although it now has a precarious financial existence.   Paul Theroux's 1978 book "The Old Patagonian Express" resulted in an upsurge of tourism, but this does not keep the line in frequent use.   Latterly it carries enthusiasts rather than general tourists.

A peaceful still from a BBC programme on the line - note that the rails are bright
