Are the boiler tubes WELDED to the boiler tube plate?
Yes, but it's a weld to seal the tube ends to the firebox tubeplate rather than a structural weld. Seal welding caters for relatively rapid local temperature fluctuations in the firebox which otherwise can create temperature differences between the tube & plate which expand differently & apart, leading to leaks between the tube & the firebox tube plate. Such leaks can be difficult to seal by rolling expander, because of rust & muck getting between the tube & plate. You can end up over-enlarging the hole in an attempt to get a mechanical (non welded) seal - this shortens the life of the box & over large tube ends in the firebox are awkward to get out of the smaller holes in the front tubeplate when tubes (which are consumable items) have to changed. Temperatures in the smokebox don't fluctuate as much, so tube ends are not welded there.
