The Lakeshore Railroad recently celebrated its 50th anniversary |
The Lakeshore Railroad at South Shields is a local miniature (9.5" gauge) contemporary of Tanfield Railway. Its history is quite interesting. Surviving the covid years with a flow of volunteers indicates it's on a good site & popular with the public. Trains run every weekend throughout the year & every day in the summer, weather permitting. (Tommy - it's midway between the Colman's chippies.)
The photos below are courtesy of John Colquhoun, who visited the railroad on 3 July:
Preparing locos outside the sheds at the South Marine Park |
Three steamers & a diesel taking a train around the boating lake |
The blue loco is visiting from the Downs Light Railway, also on the unusual 9.5" gauge |
The quadruple header threading its way between the cafe & sheds |
A steam outline atlantic visiting from Arbroath's 10.25" KMR |
There are two platforms, effectively a passing loop |
The pacific in the foreground is based at the railroad, and I think most commonly used |
